Blog Entry #4 - Greening Failed
Creating an environmental product or service is always appreciated and for obvious reasons, globally
welcomed, but in some instances, they end up being more hurtful to the environment than helpful. A very
popular service today is Uber. Uber is a transportation company that allows people to use their own cars to
earn money by picking up people like a taxi service. People believed that if we started using Uber more
and sharing rides with our friends, that it would lower pollution because of the carpooling, but that's not
the case. This is because Uber drivers are constantly driving between fares resulting in much larger
amounts of kilometres driven, along with an "increase of traffic congestion resulting in higher greenhouse
gas emissions" due to a study taken by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. Since Uber's start, it has
been the most popular transportation option, other than driving yourself. Uber introduced "ride share"
which means that if you select the option for it, the Uber driver may pick up somebody else if it’s on the
way or in the same direction as your destination. This option hasn't resulting positively due to the fact that
people don't want to sit beside someone in a car that they don't know and have never met. Although Uber
is one of the most successful businesses in 2022, the aspect and mission to reduce gas emissions from it
weren't successful. Uber has since announced that they will be going all electric, but who knows when or
if that will happen.
